What is AHA? Benefits of Alpha Hydroxy Acids for Skin

AHA, or Alpha Hydroxy Acid, is a group of water-soluble acids found naturally in sugarcane, fruits, vegetables, and milk—or made synthetically. When properly formulated and used, AHAs are renowned for their gentle yet powerful effects on the skin. They work by breaking down the bonds between dead skin cells, helping to reveal a fresh layer of skin with smoother texture and a brighter complexion. With consistent use, AHAs can also improve hyperpigmentation caused by sun damage or scarring.

Glycolic Acid: Powerful AHA for Exfoliation & Hydration

Glycolic acid has the smallest molecular size of all AHAs, allowing it to penetrate the skin more effectively. It also acts as a humectant, attracting and binding water to the skin’s surface for hydration.

When used at concentrations in the 5–10% range, over-the-counter glycolic acid delivers noticeable improvements.[1] While it can improve sun damage and hyperpigmentation, it may also increase the skin’s sensitivity to sunlight. Wearing SPF is always recommended when using products with glycolic acid.

Lactic Acid: Gentle AHA for Dry & Sensitive Skin

Lactic acid is a gentler AHA with larger molecules than glycolic acid, so it doesn’t penetrate as deeply. It is highly hydrating and some studies have shown that it stimulates ceramide synthesis and supports the skin’s barrier—a key factor in maintaining moisturized, supple skin.[2] Lactic acid is especially beneficial for dry or sensitive skin types.
